TJ Schmaltz

Chief Human Resources & Legal Officer, Prospera Credit Union

FCPHR

TJ started his career as a labour and employment lawyer, whom describes his moment of clarity as “seeing the light” and transiting into progressively more senior roles as an HR practitioner. In his current role as Chief Human Resources and Legal Officer (CHRO), TJ has executive oversight over employee experience, legal affairs and communications for Canada’s sixth largest credit union.  He has a wealth of experience with mergers and acquisitions, having overseen the people-side of Canada’s largest credit union merger in 2019 and his previous work leading HR for Impark across North America.  During his time with Impark, TJ oversaw six acquisitions and integrations which doubled the organization’s headcount to nearly 10,000 employees in Canada and the US as the organization’s CHRO.  Born out of his experience bringing organizations together as well as working through many diverse industries (ranging from financial services, retail and maximum security jails), TJ seeks to support, cultivate and unleash the power of highly engaged employees to drive organizations forward.

Outside of his day job, TJ is a part-time instructor with a part-time instructor with the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) where he teaches courses in law and HR management.  He is a proud Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) and a Senior Certified Professional (SCP) with the US Society for Human Resource Management.
